Cultured pearl ring Cultured pearl ring are made out of cultured freshwater or seawater pearls. These pearls are artificially prepared by means of pearl farming. Pearls are formed inside the mollusk when very small objects such as parasite, any form small organic matter, or a speck of organic material, gets inside the mollusk shell accidentally. This can happen at the time when the mollusk is trying to feed itself or respiration. The object gets embedded in the tissue of the oyster or mollusk. This turns out to be very irritating for the oyster.
The mollusk responds by secreting nacre, a chemical which coats the objects in layers. The chemical is combination of calcium carbonate along with the form of a fibrous protein known as conchiolin. The nacre covers the irritant layer by layer and forming a glossy bead like structure which is the pearl. As per the popular belief that a speck of sand can cause irritation and form a pearl, it is a myth for the chemical called nacre does not adhere to inorganic substances like sand.
The cultured pearls are also known as imitation pearls as they are built on an implanted shell bead nucleus. In order to have a proper shape a small bead like nucleus is impregnated in the oyster and the irritation leads to the secretion of nacre. After a few layers the cultured pearl is formed. The pearls are usually removed after six months.
